Pooch’s November

Ok, well.... that's the end of November. One month to go in 2020 and how am I doing?

1. Paint a Kings of War Army- DONE

2. Create a table of terrain to support a game- In progress!

Errr.... still no progress...... I'd better get onto this tonight!

3. Complete the 6mm Apocalypse Challenge- In progress!

You know how last month I painted another Warhound?

Well... it seems like I might have a slight weakness for Warhounds. In that I keep buying them....

Canem Victrix walks!

Note the dead Warhound head, thanks to McZ

The whole crew of Warhounds
At least they aren't 40k sized ones?

4. Run a narrative campaign for the group- DONE

5. Add a new detachment to one of my 40k armies- DONE

6. Buy a starter box and paint all of it- In progress

Ok, still not done. BUT OH SO CLOSE......

7. Paint a Space Marine Heroes Series- DONE

8. Update a 15mm Napoleonic army for Battaile Empire- DONE

I managed to keep up with my goal of painting a bit each week for this month too. I finished up another unit of Cavalry (the Empress Dragoons!), as well as another bunch of command figures, and touch ups on other bases of infantry. I had originally set them up to be units of six, but Battaile requires units of 4, so with a few more command stands, I ended up with a whole lot more infantry!

The Empress Dragoons

All the cavalry...

And all the infantry, artillery and generals!

9. Paint a stand alone force- DONE

1
0. Update and improve a table of terrain- DONE

11. Paint a Flames of War Army- In progress

Ooooh now I am close to this one. This month I finished up a unit of 4 37mm guns for my Mid War Paras (they will be in action in a couple of weeks at Remember December), as well as painting enough infantry to have a short 3rd Para platoon.

37mm guns, with Para crew

3rd Para Platoon, almost at full strength!

All that's left is a 75mm gun battery, and the remaining infantry for the 3rd platoon. The end is in sight!

12. Finish what I should have finished last year- DONE

Well, knocked off one more from the list. So with that, and with one month to go, I still have four of my 12 still in progress. That's.... worrying. I'd better get cracking!

Pooch's October update

Another month gone. And what do I have to show for it?

1. Paint a Kings of War Army- DONE

2. Create a table of terrain to support a game- In progress!

Ok, I am REALLY sucking at making progress with this one.

3. Complete the 6mm Apocalypse Challenge- In progress!

So McZ was feeling jealous about my collection of Warhound Titans, and wanted one of his own. Which obviously meant that we should split a box of two right?

And so, this month's painting is my third Warhound titan, this time with turbolasers!

With some Blood Angels Attack Bikes too!

The whole hunting pack

And I'm back to having no clue what I will do for next month...

4. Run a narrative campaign for the group- DONE

I have been struggling to get to the club this year, and even when I do, struggling to get the other nerds together to do some narrative fun. Given that failure, I decided to run a narrative game of Dracula's America at my place on Halloween!

I had an original scenario written (I'll save it for later), but due to a lack of nerds, I put the finishing touches on another scenario I had been working on.

The Wild West has begun to trouble Dracula, it remains a bleeding sore, a thorn in his side. One which threatens to cause him no end of trouble. With that in mind, he has dispatched some of his scions and the United States Army to bring law to the lawless.

Whisper Creek was one such lawless town. A town that had arisen around the so called Seer had grown into a place of trade, a safe harbour for those who would wish harm against Dracula. And so, the army came, and would take this Seer to meet with Dracula, and she would then meet her fate....

The scenario was that there were soldiers with the Seer in the hotel, and soldiers (and a Vampire!) coming to get them from the train. All the while, a posse of Congregation and Plains Indians were trying to capture the Seer for themselves, and escort her away.

It could only be described as a bloodbath, the army fought hard to hold onto their hostage, only for the Werewolf to tear through them while they were also holding off the Congregation. The army troops coming from the train were delayed enough to be no help to those in the hotel, especially once the Vampire had been gunned down by six shooters. In all, the Seer was freed by the Plains Indians!

The town of Whisper Creek

Such a cool model....

And that's all the photos I took. There was too much going on in the game!

The game played out really well, some minor things that I would change, but it reminded me that I do like Dracula's America, and I would like to play the bigger multi player scenario that I had written.

5. Add a new detachment to one of my 40k armies- DONE

6. Buy a starter box and paint all of it- In progress

Not yet done however, darnit!

7. Paint a Space Marine Heroes Series- DONE

8. Update a 15mm Napoleonic army for Battaile Empire- In progress!

ACTUAL PROGRESS ON THIS!

Some of the other nerds played a game of Battaile Empire recently, and really enjoyed it. It turned out to be the push which I actually needed to make a start on the clump of 15mm Napoleonics I had lying around, and I set myself the goal of finishing a unit of Cavalry each week of October.

I actually ended up doing more than that, with five regiments of Cavalry complete!

Hussars!

Three units of Lancers and a Commander

Grenadier a Cheval!

Next month? I have one more regiment of cavalry, some infantry command stands and then touch ups to go.

9. Paint a stand alone force- DONE

1
0. Update and improve a table of terrain- DONE

11. Paint a Flames of War Army- In progress

Two bits of progress on this one. First, I took the army to Flamescon in Auckland. How did it do? Not great. Part of it was me not playing it well, part of it was me rolling bad dice and part of it was my opponents having really good counters to my list.

Bombing run!

Paras doing what paras do best. Assault!

And Shermans doing what they should be better at. Hiding!

Remember December is in December, and we have decided to play 60 points of Mid War. Since it's the year of the 82nd, only makes sense that I would play the Mid War variant too! To get them ready, I needed to finish up some more units namely:

Three Zvezda Lees and an Armoured Recon Platoon

There is a Para 37mm platoon to go to, but I need the guns to arrive from Battlefront...

12. Finish what I should have finished last year- DONE

Ok... so seven done, five in progress. On track (ish).....

Pooch's December Update and a review of 2019

Well, here we are. The last of the 2019 posts for me. Lets see how I did shall we?

1. Paint a new 40k army- DONE!

This one I have been working away at for the entire year. The Krieg army grew steadily from a few figures, to a few units, then a few detachments... until this point, where I have now actually finished every single Imperial Guard (Astra Militatium) model that I own. It's all painted, it's all done.

How much is done? Well, points wise it adds up to: 4,411 points.

This month I finished four Leman Russ, a Basilisk and a Sentinel. The basilisk and the sentinel are just stock standard kits, painted in the same grey as the rest.

The Leman Russ however are painted in the same 4 tone WW1-esque camo as the Shadowsword, and have had their main guns, and the hull gun swapped over. My goal was the get a vehicle that had more in common with the M3 Grant/Lee tank from WW2, or the St Chamond from WW1. It ws actually suprisingly easy to swap the battle cannon into the hull, it was more of an ordeal to carve back the lascannon mounting to fit into the turret. Not impossible... just... annoying....

Super happy with how it looks!

Six vehicles- 4 Leman Russ, a Sentinel and a Basilisk
A good shot of the swapped weapons

And this is the whole lot. I'll sort out a better set of photos for a future blog post
2. Create a table of terrain to support a game - DONE!

Finished this one in March, with a whole table of terrain to support the Cruel Seas game. It's more likely to get used for Black Seas now however!

3. Make a modular piece of terrain - DONE!

This one was the crashed Valkyrie I finished up last month. I had big plans to do for this one, but it ended up being a bit of a cop out....

4. Paint a naval fleet DONE!

Finished this one in March too, this was my Cruel Seas US fleet and U-boat.

5. Finish something for an army I haven't used in a year, and take it to a tournament DONE!

Did this one in July to expand my US army to cover both Scotty and I for Panzershrek. It was great fun running the US at a tournament, so I am actually doing something similar for Valleycon- lending a US list to another local, and expanding my US yet further so that I can run two independent 100 point US forces. Yes, it's possible I am loony.

6. Buy a starter box and paint all of it DONE!

I finished this one twice, first with the Gangs of Rome in February (who I will be using for our Frostgrave day today!), and the second was Aeronautica Imperialis which I finished up last month.

7. Paint every miniature for a game I own DONE!

I finished up this one twice before, in February with the Batman Miniatures Game, and in November with the Mortal Gods game. Both games I am looking forward to getting into in the new year, with both Batman V3 and Mortal Gods Mythic on the horizon.

And, I actually completed this for a third time this month by finishing up my Escher crew.... that I painted most of last year...

Necromunda is a game which our wider group has all seemed to more or less buy into, but not actually play many games of yet.

Didn't stop me converting one of the Chaos cultists in the Blackstone Fortress Escalation box into an Escher with Heavy Stubber (basically just a headswap was all that was needed!) and using the Primaris Psyker from that same box as an Escher Wyrd (will be a bounty hunter I'd expect).

Space Wizard, and girl with a very big gun
8. Paint a Space Marine Hero each month DONE!

I'll be honest, this one was a slog in October and November. I got the "the finish line is in sight and I can't seem to force myself to want to paint them" problem.

Not so in December. I had actually finished up the Krieg and everything else I 'had' to do this month within the first 10 days of the month, meaning that there was no pressure to paint the Storm Lord. And man was that refreshing!

So good in fact, that I painted two of them. the first is the final model from the Space Marine Heroes range, the Captain. The second, is a terminator from the Space Hulk boxed set. I removed the Blood Angels Icons, and had one of the locals 3d print a perfect base for him so that he matches the other Space Marine heroes.

And with that, the whole Storm Lords force is done!

9. Paint a stand alone force DONE!

Oh man did I complete this one. The Titans for Adeptus Titanicus in March, the Gellerpox in May and I finished up a squad of rebels from Star Wars Legion for me to use in Zone Raiders this month too! I simply had to add Jyn Erso to them too.... because it would be wrong not to....

Zone Raiders is another game I need to play in 2020!

Ugly camo, and jungle style bases. So cool.

Jyn!

10. Update and improve a table of terrain DONE!

This was my Team Yankee desert table, which I finished up in July so that I could bring it to Panzershrek. They turned out to not need it, but it will be used at Valleycon next month!

11. Paint something Napoleonic DONE!

I am going to start this off by saying that Black Seas is a good game. I expect it will annoy hard core Napoleonic sailing nerds, but it has enough in it for me to feel like I am playing a game with sailing ships, and I can do things and make things happen without consulting many, many charts.

And so, I am really excited to have my French fleet competed! Made up of two First Rate, three Third Rate, three Frigates, eight Brigs and a base of gunboats. I didn't put sails on them so that I could easily differentiate them when I play against some of the other club mates' fleets (who do have the sails). I did rig them up, and put little tricolours on the back however!

The full fleet!

The two First Rates- the generic one, and the Orient

I took them away on holiday to do the rigging... this was them all hidden into the carrying case

Another game that I need to play in 2020. Noticing a theme for that yet?

12. Finish something I should have last year DONE!

I did well here, finishing up two things in the first couple of months in the year- my Death Guard and the Polish for Team Yankee. Both I am contemplating expanding, but I am (for now) happy with where both are at.

Mortywatch! DONE!

And the bonus one! I am really, really proud of the work which I did on Morty. He was a big model, and by tacking him in sections I was able to make him achievable, and actually fun to paint. Added too, I am really, really pleased with how he came out- especially his face.

Reflections

So that was 2019, with all of my goals completed. Some better than others, but they did all get done. I started doing this blog to give myself some structure for what I painted in the year, and to give my inner magpie some constraints on what it purchased. While not always successful, I was better than I could have been, and most importantly, actually finished things I started.

With that in mind then, come back tomorrow for my plan for 2020!

Review: BattleKiwi Part 2: La Belle Alliance

So as McB said in his post, we are all basically hooked on BattleKiwi products. Being the magpie that I am, I am no different.

When BattleKiwi posted up about creating a 28mm MDF version of La Belle Alliance, my first response was naturally "can I have it in 15mm?"

And, sure enough, this pile of MDF arrived with my latest base order....

Many, many pieces of cut MDF
So after having the last few weeks' modelling time only spent on writing, it was a nice change for the weekend to sit down and build some things, and La Belle Alliance was first on the list!

How did it shape up? Well, this is the real one...

And this is BattleKiwi's offering:

Old Guard added for effect

And the roof comes off!
How do I rate it then?
  • BattleKiwi uses coloured MDF which is masked for cutting. This means that you can have a whole white wall (the coloured) with the bricks and windowsills in brown (the masking tape). This gives a really good effect, for not having to pick up a paint brush!
  • Assembly was easy, my approach is to always dryfit stuff, then glue using Super Glue. This kit was no different, and it went together in only a few minutes (once I had figured out where all the pieces went!)
  • Detail. Being a scaled down 28mm kit, there are some very detailed pieces here- especially the window shutters. These are seperate pieces, and can be modelled open or closed (I did a mix as you can see). While fiddly, they look awesome! If you aren't so keen on the fiddly detailing, you could easily leave them off.
The 15mm kit hasn't reached the BattleKiwi site yet, but I have high hopes for some more kits like it!

Progressing the Nappies.

School Holidays are a great time to catch up on painting - and I have been enjoying the Napoleonic painting in 15mm. Since my last post I have finished basing the Cavalry - discovered I miscounted when I ordered, finished another Battalion of Brunswickers, reflagged the 33rd West Riding Battalion and ordered the rest of my Cav and Brunswickers. So this is the overall project so far.
Thats 10 Battalions of infantry, 3 1/2 Regiments of Cav, Artillery and assorted Command stands.
Plenty more to do - probably a Brigade of Portuguese and finish the Light Cav, can't wait to get some more games in too.....hint, hint :) T

CHAAAAAAARGE!!!!!!!

Well - its been a wet and nasty weekend in Wellington, so what a great opportunity to smash out some overdue painting. So to the painting table I went and found some 15mm Napoleonic Cavalry. Heavy Peninsula War British Cav to be exact. Lots of wee detail but I got there in the end. These will join the slowly growing British Napoleonic army that I am building to play with McBeth and Pooch's Napoleonic rules that our dear friend and comrade Nick started before his sad passing. Let me just say Messrs Pooch and McBeth are doing a fantastic job and one day we will all be playing by their rules :)
I still need to finish the basing but overall I am enjoying painting 15mm again - who'd have thought!!

Hussies, Remembering and Infinity

Hi all,

Infinity

Last week neither Pelarel nor I could make it out to the club, so we decided to play a game of Infinity in Pelarel's basement instead!

We played a 252 point game (because that was all I had) of my Haqqislam against Pelarel's Yu Jing. It was my first game of Infinity V2 and Pelarel had not played many recently so alot of time was spent reading rules. To help, I had McBeth Junior no.2 rolling my dice. As it turned out, his ability to roll exactly what was needed (and therefore scoring a critical hit), turned the game completely in our favour.
The table: Pelarel's Infinity table is coming along nicely

Freedom! Enlightenment! Haqqislam!

Boo. Ninjas.

 The highlights of the game were;

  • My Djanbazan sniper being shot twice, but with two wounds and regeneration, popping back up to shoot and kill the ninja who shot him with his shock rifle,
  • The mook (Ghulam) who, upon spotting a door being opened 24" away and taking an ARO to shoot the said door opener, rolled exactly 5 on the die (the score needed to hit) and with that critical, took out another Asian corporate enforcer, and
  • The showdown between the Martial Arts L5, CC 22 ninja and my Martial Arts L3, CC21 Asawira, where as both had already lost a wound each, the Asawira rolled the exact score of 18 to crit the ninja and finish him off.

In the end, the mighty forces of freedom loving, enlighten Haqqislam triumphed over the evil corporations of Yu Jing.

Hussies and Remembering

When Nick passed last year, our friend Nichole was keen to get a memento from Nicks collection. One of the things she would laugh about was that the Napoleonic wars had units of Hussars, or Hussys, as she called them. Unfortunately all the Hussars Nick had painted were put into a job lot of his Napoleonic French so there were none left over for Nichole.

As I was going through some of Nicks left over stuff in my basement, I found a sprue of the Perry French Hussars and a thought occurred to me - why dont I paint them up and mount them for a display for Nichole. It took me a while to complete the work, but I was really happy to present Nichole with the finished product earlier this week. I hope she enjoys it.

Nicks Hussies
Hussies gonna Huss.

2016 - New Year Plan (McBeth)

Now that the 12 Games of Gamesmas are out of the way, I can now look at what the rest of 2016 will hold for my magpieisim! A long post follows...

There are several projects that I'm working on, or have an eye of starting this year. Pooch mentioned to us a while back that blogging a post like this will 'help with our issues' and 'lay out a path for keeping the magpieisim under control'.

Pffff. Whatever.

Anyway, a look for the future! Here is a break down of the things I want to do this year.

  • Flames of War

Our time committed to Flames has reduced to almost nothing this past 12 months. I'm running the ValleyCon16 Flames comp this year so don't have to paint anything for that particular competition, but I have an eye out for later in the year when we make our first post Nick pilgrimage up to Palmerston North for Panzershreck. I hear that Panzershreck may be Early War this year and will continue to be a 1000 point doubles competition. I have a couple of Early War armies (NZ Divisional Cavalry and a German Infanteriekompanie) but I also have the bones of a Free French French Foreign Legion rifle company in a box in the basement that needs to be painted. It would also be a great accompanying unit for the Div Cav for Panzershreck! I've also picked up some other units for my Late War 51st Highland Division rifle company that need to have some paint applied. 16 years of playing Flames (and getting paid in product!) has lead me to a point where there is not much more I want to do in regards to making more armies as my time commitment to Flames competitions winds down.

To do for 2016

Free French

Strip, paint and base:
2 platoons of Legionnaires
1 platoon of Sappers
1 75mm Artillery Battery
1 25mm AT Battery

These will join the already painted and based Australian 2pdr Portee Platoon, H35 Hochkiss Platoon and a veteran British Marmon-Herrington troop.

Scots

Paint:
Wasp troop
M10 tank destroyer

Purchase and paint
M10 Tank destroyer (a second one for the troop)

  • Blackpowder

As mentioned in previous posts, I set the group on a path towards a large multi-player American Revolution game for a convention that is being held over the Easter Weekend in the Hutt this year. We have been smashing through the painting of troops and terrain in preparation for this but we still have a long way to go. I'm in command of the British and have been steadily painting units for them. So far I have completed the 3rd Brigade (15th, 17th (replaced with 45th because no-one does the flag!, 44th and 42nd), the 1st and 2nd Grenadier Battalions, the Guards Brigade (1st and 2nd Guards Battalions), a cannon and some brigade commanders.

To do for 2016

Paint and base:
6pdr Cannon
12 figures of Hessian Jaegers
2 Brigade Commanders

Purchase, paint and base:
54 figures of Hessian Grenadiers (will swap out one battalions worth for McZermof for some Rebel Scum so he does not go mental painting them!)

Add to that finishing off the terrain and that's me for the next 2-3 months!

  • Bolt Action

Our new magpieism! I'm planning on doing a late war British rifle company for this, based on the 51st Highlanders again. Haven't really settled on a list or purchased any figures yet OR EVEN PLAYED A GAME but as the other are keen and I REALLY WANT TO PLAY 28mm WW2, I'll get involved as well :). Stay tuned on this front. Ideally Mighty Ape ('Dat Ape) will restock its Bolt Action stocks so I can spend some Xmas vouchers with them :)

  • Frostgrave

McZermof and I played a couple more games of Frostgrave for Gamesmas and rekindled my like of this lightweight but very fun game. While I don't need anymore figures or warbands (Wizardbands? Wizgangs?), I have plenty of Perry Miniatures plastic medieval sprues lying around for me to make more mooks. As seen in the post for Gamesmas, I also dug out my copy of Heroes Quest so I can use the monsters in that game for Frostgrave. Those figures will probably get a lick of paint this year.

Maybe.

The real thing I want to do for Frostgrave is make some terrain to accompany the Big Hand Statue. I've plenty of cork board and MDF in the basement so I may try and yet again get the Junior McBeths involved and get some terrain done this year to flesh out a table of ruins.

To do for 2016

Paint:
Heroes Quest monsters (particularly the undead)

Make, paint and base:
Terrain - ruined buildings!

  • Infinity

This is both the RPG and the table top game. Over the Christmas Gamesmas break Pelarel loaned me the rules for the tabletop game with the fluff book as well. The fluff really impressed me. I had played a few games a while ago but had never read the books or setting fluff to get what it was all about. Now I've read through it I must say Corvus Belli have done a fantastic job of creating a fully fleshed out universe. I have some Haqqislam figures already, but as people have already commented on their surprise that I did not start with Ariadna forces initially, I'll be looking to get a starter pack for them. How can I not run a force that combines my two favourite national forces; Scots and French!

To do for 2016

Buy and paint:
Ariadna sectoral starter pack

  • Napoleonics

I started my first blogs on this forum with pictures of the 15mm Austrian army I was building for Napoleon at War. Since then interest has not waned, but time spent on the army has been marginalised. I have done some more work on them in regards to basing them and adding flags, but the AWI stuff has been more pressing.

To do for 2016
Paint and base:
2 battalions of Germans
1 battalion of Hungarians
1 squadron of Hussies
Finish the basing for the whole army
1 more 6 pounder to mount on the limber base.

  • Competitions and Travel

There are only a couple of events that I want to get to this year. There is ValleyCon of course, seeing I'm the registrar, committee member, treasurer and am running the Flames comp. There is the historical convention run by Allen Yaxley which will be held over Easter where we will run the AWI game and there is also Panzershreck. Anything else would be a bonus, but most other comps fall at times during the year that other non-wargaming things pop up on as well. I may head over to Call to Arms this year and play Bolt Action or Impetus perhaps.

Right, now onto the things I would like to do this year!

  • Kings of War

This game looks cool. I wasn't a big fan of the Warhammer Fantasy game, but the background fluff was interesting. With the death of Warhammer and the rise of the apparent abortion that is the Age of Sigmar, Kings of War has taken off in New Zealand. There are now organised events around the country and the size is growing. I've looked longingly at the Mantic stuff on Mighty Ape ('dat Ape!) and it is a very reasonable price. More so when you consider that as Kings of War uses a set base size for the different strength units (a'la Impetus) you don't need to actually put the right amount of figures on each base. You can go for using less and model nice dioramas and use the spare figures for more units!
*Mantic Games

I'm fascinated by the undead armies in these types of games so I would look at running an undead army of skeletons and zombies for Kings of War. Throw in a Vampire Lord on a frickin' undead Pegasus and I am in! I may have to paint the pony to look like this though:

Undead my little pony. Seems Legit.
  • Team Yankee
Having played a couple of games with Pooch, I'm pretty sure I like it, but really need to play more. I have a West German force in 6mm with Leopard 2s, Leopard 1s, Marders etc that was originally done for Cold War Commander that I would like to use whenever Battlefront get to expanding the available nations from the current 'Merican and Soviet ones. The models are all old Heroics and Ros 1/300th and are all just a bit shit, so I'd love to replace them with some smexy new ones from GHQ or CinC miniatures.
*image copyright Battlefront Miniatures

  • Dead Man's Hand

This fell by the weigh side very quickly after we started playing it two years ago, but that is to be expected when we jump from one shiny to another shiny like some wargaming whore. I liked the cinematic feel of this game and Tank Engine has a sweet town set up that we should use more often.

*image copyright Great Escape Games

  • In Her Majesty's Name

Another 'silly' game in the vein of Frostgrave or Dead Man's Hand, but very enjoyable none the less. I have a British army and a Vampire force, plus I can repurpose my DMH desperadoes for a cowboy/villain list as well.

  • Ambush Valley

Pelarel and I did the testing for Battlefront's 15mm Vietnam book, Tour of Duty. Again, much like Team Yankee, we didn't like the scale that Battlefront went for (being company + scale rather than 15mm). For us, the Vietnam war was platoon scale. So, with some NVA, VC and ANZACs we are getting through painting and basing 15mm figs on individual bases for some Ambush Valley. We've played Ambush Alley and Force on Force a bit in the past so it will be interesting to see how it translates to Vietnam.
