The en-base-en-ing

The first of the Ghostie bases is ready for it's two final details:

The gel medium in the puddles needs to go in but I have to wait for the flock to dry before I do that and Blogger Pooch suggested getting Blogger Triple T to 3D print some flames to add a bit more ghosty charm to the base (which is also more fun than adding flowers or similar!)

The army went out for a run yesterday and it was scary. It seems very glass cannon-y on paper, which I defo kept sticking to, as it gave both Blogger Tank and Blogger McBeth's KoW armies a real going over. Turns out being crazy fast and having Fly and Dread in some quantity was effective. My dice, especially against McBeth, were outrageous too.

I did have the funny idea yesterday that maybe, given we've all got giants to play with, maybe I should buy Nagash...

SURPRISE!

I've started rebasing a 15mm Wallachian IMPETVS (that was once a FoG army) for two reasons. One, there's an event coming up later in the year I'd like top play in but second, this is one of the dumbest. armies I've ever done and I love it and would be so pleased to see it on the table again.

Having once painted an historically correct 25mm Wallachian list, I decided that a dumb version in 15mm would be hilarious having discovered a wonderful Mirliton Russian range that definitely looked the part and that they stocked an Undead range I could definitely use. So here we go:

There will be a lot of archers in this army. Basically everything that isn't a cavalry will be an archer so I'm starting with the skirmishers so I don't go completely feral. For an example of the cavalry:

Two bases of Light Cavalry Bow with an option for Elite. They're really well designed to be able to make more sensibly posed light horse bases. I remember some really terrible 15mm sculpts in DBM armies I owned that could simply not look like this.

Finally, for a sense of what the whole thing looks like more finished, the generals bases:

Complete with werewolves, ghouls, skeletons and humans (so I can affix flags to those spears!) The whole army is this kind of stupid. There are gravestones in places just for grins too. Amazingly, I've even got painting to do for it (as the two bases of Knights that the army is allowed never got painted in FoG) and so there's some Wight Knights still to do, which I'm looking forward to.

The question will be whether I can replicate a (WTF. HOW AM I THIS OLD??) nearly 15 year old paint job. That's why I've never blogged this. This army dates back to the late 2000s...

Next Time

More of the enbasening will be done and I think I'll try and do a few breachers for a break!

Turns out it's next time!

With some miracles and a bit of free time (and taking a week off to go on holiday!), the Spectres are done:

Thanks to blogger Pooch for finding me a spare base, I got these painted during the week and I'm pretty pleased. They slot nicely into the rest of the army and, given it's been a couple of years since I painted the last lot, that makes me happy I took the time to make careful notes of the order of operations!  Next stop - basing the whole army!

And finally, the test Breacher:

I do like the Studio colour scheme but decided, upon much Googling of book art, to do something more like the officer's uniform. Not super sure about the red shotgun (which you can't see!) but I do like a red firearm in 40K.

Next Time

I'll be pushing hard to get the Ghosties based for club day next weekend. Might not get there but we'll give it a punt. Then Breachers and rebasing to bring an old project back to life!

Workbench week

A week of doing not very much on the painting front this week but I have started working on one of the projects I wanted to finish.

After I de-based my Teutonic Order to rebase them for ADLG, I was without a complete Kings of War army. The lads playing it at the club last week made me realised I needed to finish the one I had mostly done and some relatively recent releases from GW have made me think about how to finish it up.

So I started with a test base on my Dream Hunter:

It's still drying, but I hope that I can do this whole army over a mess of dark green grass and dark green puddles. I'm going to see how the puddle comes up and if it works, I'll make a bigger one on another base.

Secondly, I've built and primed (and started on models not in the photo because they wouldn't stand up!) the last unit:

The last unit is a proper proxy for the one Night Stalker ranged unit, the Spectres. They're a really cool set of models and I'm using some of the best models in the Nighthaunt range for one of the worst units in the Night Stalkers list. Oh well. They're a really fun looking unit and they'll be a really nice blending in with the bits of the army with the flag and roses on the still ghosty models.

I still don't have a good proxy for most of the Monsters in the list and the Large Infantry but I'll have a poke around the range and see what comes up. Something that would stand in for a Mindscreech would be fun.

Next Time

Breachers? I have started a test model but decided I should also base the unit before I get into painting so half way through I stopped while the basing material dries. Oops. I'm also going to start rebasing a 15mm IMPETVS army into ADLG in the not too distant future and it's something I've never blogged, I don't think so should be a fun surprise.

Pooch's May update

So I was so late in finishing my April update, that I was actually also able to complete most of my May update at the same time... Oops.

But, on to what I painted this month!

1. Paint a platoon for Flames of War

This month I finished up some more Shermans for my Late War US Army, which included finishing up a whole lot of additional turrets to give me options for different Sherman armaments.

The finished platoon- 6 105mm Shermans, 2 were new hulls, all new turrets

The extra turret haul! 75mms, 76mms, Jumbo turrets....

I also added some mud to the last of the tanks I had previously painted too!

Snowy and muddy

And more things that I have previously painted!

More snowy and muddy!

Next up? Not sure, probably some Infantry!

2. Add something to armies I have already painted

I have a large Adeptus Sororitas army for 40k, and we have been getting back of playing both small games of 40k using the Boarding Action rules, but also playing Kill Team. Last year I bought a box of Novitiates, so that I would be able to play the specific Sororitas Kill Team, and this month I finall got them painted!

A variety of close combat weapons

More close combat weapons!

And since I had to get the airbrush out to do the white armour on the Novitiate Superior, I also finished up a sister with a flamer to use in both Kill Team and in Boarding Action too!

Burninate.

The sub-goal of "One Marvel Crisis Protocol Miniature a month" continues, with Angela to finish off all of the Asgardians I own. Which reminds me that I need to buy Beta Ray Bill....

3. Finish up a piece of terrain

Not only did I paint up a new Kill Team, I also painted a table with which to play games of Kill Team on!

I bought the Kill Zone Moroch Box, and promptly painted it up. My painting method was a couple of cans of spraypaint grey, lots of different colours for detailing, and then oil washes to bring it into a more "grimdark" feel.

The quality of the terrain is really high- it's really modular, with clever attachment points and other things to make it super useable. I especially love the 40k radar dish, it's such a lovely sci fi element. I would not be at all sad to buy some more to make up a full 40k table!

4. Play a game a month, that was different to the last month

Skirmish gaming in the 40k universe? With a massive variety of missions, unique individuals and units? And a really fun set of mechanics?

Completing the theme for the month, it's Kill Team!

You can play it indoors.....

Sisters vs Navy Breachers

Boltgun vs Shotgun!

You can play it outdoors (on my new terrain no less!)...

Icon Bearer, on a roof.

The Novitiates advance! They are all about to be gunned down by a demonic bolter, or killed by a Powerfist....

The dastardly forces of the Emperor's Children

Novitiate Superior vs Sorceror. She did not win....

Novitiates running for terrain in the second game!

See McZ's post for more photos of the outdoor games.

Regardless of where you play it, Kill Team is a really enjoyable game with a suprisingly large amount of depth. The Sororitas and the Novitiates kill teams play really differently- while the Novitiates have a lot more unique models and interactions, they are just so much less survivable than the full Battle Sisters- who are relying on boltguns, power armour and faith to get the job done.

Oh, and flamers, meltas and various types of bolters certainly help too!

5. Paint a Hundred Years War French Army for ADLG

The slow progress on this army continues....

Paint one Knight for ADLG

Paint one base for ADLG

I finished up the first commander for the army, none other than Jeanne of Arc herself!

Perry Miniatures knocks it out of the park again with a great sculpt!

Oh, and more peasants!

Must be time for crossbowmen?
