Bolt Action Mayhem

With Prinny departing for Ireland, we had been musing over what to do with Bolt Action as both he and I are quite taken. Anyhow post McBeth's birthday bash we thought can we scale this game up. So here is what happened.

We settled on 2400 points with 4 platoons, then we could have 8 players, the more the merrier. Plus it what be chaos.

We rolled out to the Hutt Wargaming Club (blatant plug) and sey up a 10x4 table. I think we could have reduced it to 8x4, a bit tighter but with Bolt Action you want your troops in the game assaulting things, as you will see.

The setup

The setup, Germans from the left Allies from the right

Bede explains the finer points of Veteran Paras to an on looking Stanton

Pelarel's Scout car rushes forward, to be 'rooted' by the Marder

The Hungarians only got this far forward before the artillery arrived

And here is what followed the artillery up on the Hungarians

 The second 'rooted' Scout Car

Well look at all those Paras, and the wana'be sniper in the ruins

The Tiger misses another target with his main gun...sigh

The Marder valiantly holds the right flank!

The Zyrinyi continues to be ineffective hitting but killing nothing

Bede's trail of assaulting destruction, he got all three half-tracks, Colin's Cromwell nailed the Stuka Da Fuss

Highlights, no so highlights, and what we learned
- McZermof's half-track nailing Perlarel's sniper in the first turn with precision MMG fire
- Pooch's Marder 'roots' a White Scout car with his first shot bailing the squad inside
- Prinny's Mortar ranges in first turn on Pooch's MMG
- Colin's Cromwell obliterates one of Tom's Pumas, after Bede's bazooka misses
- British artillery lands on target, both salvo's, wiping out the Pooch's on board 105 and pinning the Germans and Hungarians on the right flank very deep in a hole of doing nothing.
- Scotty's Csaba rooting the other White Scout Car
- Tom's other Puma passes its order needing a 5 with 4 pin markers
- Pelarel's MMG team rout a Hungarian unit after 'sniping' the NCO and piling on the pins with the aid of Prinny on the right flank
- The Tiger drives around the table scaring people by firing it's big gun, though hitting nothing
- Starting with 48 order dice
- Bede ended the game with six of the seven dice he started with, the rest of us not so much. Germans had seven of 21 by the end of turn six
- The Allies take the game 4-1 on objectives and would have wiped us out on a 7th turn, if we had one, possibly....
- Artillery can be devastating when it lands, and you do not need to kill a unit to take it out of the game enough pins will do that for you
- This is an infantry game, tanks look spectacular but once they begin to be pinned they are no help at all, especially if you fubar and run away...I am looking at you Zyrinyi
- This game would work well in a doubles format
- This game looks spectacular with lots of terrain and painted stuff
- Pooch paints far too quickly for the rest of us....
- Revenge will be had ........

Till next time

Pooch's Painting- April

Despite my lateness (I blame everyone else's Impetus posting), another month has passed us by- we are a third of the way through the year! And as for the projects, well, they are definitely ongoing!

This month, I have finished another Bolt Action force, this time British from Black Tree miniatures. These have been painted for a buddy of mine Colin, and I think he is using them in the game at the weekend...

The whole British force

Bren Gunner

Warlord Bren Gun carrier

6pdr

NCO with a Sten gun
Now off to Modern Africa. First we have some mercenaries from Militia Miniatures:

The whole group of mercenaries

All the stereotypes Part 1

All the stereotypes Part 2
But what would mercenaries be without some opponents? These are Modern Africans from Spectre Miniatures. Not my favourite models in this space, their guns are really spindly (which may well be accurate, but fragile), but that said, there are some really dynamic poses in the set.

The whole gang

Looking menacing in bright colours

Blue suit is ready to party....

Consider this a "how to guide" for not hitting anything with your AK

The boss and some more loyal crew
Lastly this month, we have another Wizgang for Frostgrave, this time, it is Rat Men! These are formerly my Mordheim skaven warband, but with the arrival of Frostgrave it gave me the excuse to finally paint them. All I needed to add was the Grey Seer as my wizard, and they were good to go!

The whole Wizgang
The brains- the wizard and his apprentice

The muscle- Rat Ogre

The numbers- 5 giant rats (Warhounds)

Goons #1

Goons #2

Goon Commander
So there you have it, another month gone, more progress against my painting goals for the year. What does May have in store? Well, I do have one BA army left to go....

Just in time......

With all the distractions of Bolt Action drawing me in, I have managed to focus enough to complete my list for V3 at the end of the month.

I am running Ottoman Turks from 1350-1520, all the cavalry and all the shooty, though not as many units as I would like. Pelarel has 20 odd in his Welsh list!

So without further ado I present

Azab Archers

Janisarries

Light Cavalry - Akinji and Turkoman allies.

Medium Cavalry and Generals - Saphias and Qapukulu

and the whole shabang!

Once I have finished my baggage that will show up here as well...

Till then...

One year and a hundred posts!

So this is a little late, but I just realised that this blog has now been running for a year (well a year and a month) and has 100 posts (well, 106 now!).

I, for one, think that's an amazing feat for a bunch of easily distracted gamers who would rather be trying each new game once than actually recording what we do, but we have been quite successful in keeping the posts flowing.

We have had ups and downs this past year, namely losing our good friend Nick Garden back in September. The loss is still fresh in our minds, but not too fresh that we cant still have fun at his expense. Also on the bummer side, Prinny is due to farg off to Ireland in a couple of weeks. We'll miss him and his enabling skills. If it wasn't for Tim, we wouldn't be playing half the games we play at the moment!

On the positive side we have played many, many, many games this past 12-13 months. Impetus, Bolt Action, Black Powder, Infinity, Aurelian, Warmachine, Napoleon at War and Frostgrave to name a few. We have painted, painted and painted. And talked a lot of bullshit. A lot.

I think its pretty cool that we have people that follow this post. We dont play the games for you guys, because we are horribly self centered people, but it is awesome to know that there are others like us out there that love wargaming and board gaming and probably have little or no self control when it comes to buying and playing these games!

Thank you guys!

Onwards for the next year with some upcoming highlights
  • V3 is coming up on the 28th of May. This is our (semi)annual Impetus competition. Should have quite a few players this time.
  • June Bolt Action - Mr Goldstone will be running a one-day comp at the club that we are all keen for.
  • Panzershreck in July! First one without either Tim or Nick so I'll probably drink more (not that I need a reason) and it is Early War so I'm quietly fizzing at the bung for this.

Also, in other news, Scott Bowman (www.ScottsWargaming.blogspot.com), has started stocking Warlord Games stock in his pharmacy* in Paraparaumu (just up the road from Wellington). He has a licence to stock and order the ranges Warlord Games offers so he best expect a bit of business coming his way from the Regiment!

*Yes, a pharmacy. Scott was reluctant to confirm if wargames models are allowed to be prescribed for medical reasons. Perhaps we should get some funding from PHARMAC...?

Deepest Darkest....

I have just finished my school holidays and I have spent most of my modelling time knee deep in a really cool terrain project. Colin at Skirmish Sangin asked me to build some African Terrain for a new expansion to Radio Dishdash's Skirmish game called Skirmish Afrika. Here is a link to their blog if you want to find out more about the game here
My centre piece is this jungle bar. This took a while to build but I now have the deck and pillars all straight and solid. A corrugated Iron removable roof is also part of this structure. It is a nice clear space to fight around so I have added some tables for things to hide behind.
I have also created some jungle bases and scatter, some fences, roads and a couple of out buildings.

This has been an extremely enjoyable project and one I hope works well for Skirmish Afrika. As part of what I am doing for Colin, I am also writing a "How Do..." Article, so once published I will link that into this blog.

McBeth's April update

Well, its been a while since I've posted. its not due to any painter's funk, in fact I've been pretty successful at painting figures over the last couple of weeks since the big Brandywine game.

While I'm happy NOT to be painting AWI British at the moment, I have been very happy with the new magpieism, Bolt Action! I have been painting some of the impressive Italeri 28mm British infantry for my growing Bolt Action force.

Below are some pics of the figures so far. Normally I dont like posting half completed projects, but I feel that I need a little push to make me complete these as there are other projects I'm keen to start / finish / fantasise about!

The force is a platoon from the 'Forty Twa', The Black Watch from their time in the 51st Highland Division, France 1944-45. I've add in some of the metal Warlord Games heads with Tam O'Shanter hats. So far, the lieutenant, the sniper team, PIAT team and one section have been painted and half based. Another section is made up and undercoated black and is next on the painting bench once I finish the second project below.

My Lieutenant, He will be accompanied by a batman and a radio operator. The figure is made from the upper torso of a Italeri British kneeling figure and the lower half of a Victrix Napoleonic Highlander.

PIAT team. I expect great things from this pair!

Sniper team. Watch out enemy officers...

Nothing to see here. No, this not a Churchill VII. But it is.
Next up, Commando support for the Scots.
Continuing with his great service, Laser Cut Rob came through with these for me. The one on the left will be my mortar team's base with space to add and remove figures for casualties. The one on the right shows the component pieces, a 70mm round 3mm MDF base with three 26mm holes cut into it, and a 1mm thick 70mm round black acrylic base that gets glued on the bottom.
Project 2: Flames of War. Yep, back into painting some 15mm WW2 from Battlefront. Its actually a bit of a chore to go back to this scale, but as it will a) finish off a long standing project and b) get an army ready for Panzershreck in July, I'll soldier on and get it done.

Pelarel and I are teaming up again this year. One will use my NZ Divisional Cavalry, the other these Free French Foreign Legion.

Legionnaire sappers!
